22Just finished watching the film Last Days, which in a (fictional) way tells the story of Kurt Cobain in his last few days before he took his own life.
Awfully dragging film. But it inspired me to look up this:

More soundtrack (or cover) goodies. I’m taking a guess this song was originally done by Alphaville. I sorta like this cover, brought forward to the modern tune of alternative rock by Youth Group (who?).
The song appeared in one of The O.C: Season 3 episodes. So it has a good chance of being included in one of many volumes of The O.C mix tape soundtrack. Last count, there are already 4 volumes in the market after the end of season 2 of The O.C.

19Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth…

I’ve been downhearted baby, ever since the day we met
Yes, another mid-90s era track, but this is a classic. Caught it playing over the radio this morning and I couldn’t resist to repeat it on my playlist now.
With one of the longest song name title I can remember and with an ultra cool band name, Primitive Radio Gods hit it big with B.B. King’s How Blue Can You Get sampled single Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth with Money in My Hand from the album Rocket in 1996. The track also appeared in Jim Carrey’s The Cable Guy soundtrack, which includes Silverchair, Cypress Hill, Filter, Ruby, Cracker, Porno for Pyros and Pearl Jam-affiliated $10,000 Gold Chain (both did Lou Reed covers) to name a few. Alice in Chain’s guitarist Jerry Cantrell also performed a solo track.
Phonebooth gave Primitive Radio Gods cult status for a while, before the evil-do of the recording industry dropped the Gods whilst still working on a next record. In the own words of singer/song-writer Jerry O’Connor, “It was like, ‘It’s fine if we fail, if we make a second record and there’s no hits and nobody likes it,’ but don’t we even get a chance to fail?”.
Bummer.

Yeah, she is beautiful but she don’t mean a thing to me
Couple years old track, but good tracks never get out of taste. That’s the beauty of music, they have no expiring date.

10A trip back to the good old days

I started listening to music when I was about 11 or 12 years old. I remember I used to dig through my brothers’ CDs and cassettes (Carey, Houston, Boyz II Men, NKOTB and a rare GnR) back then when they weren’t around. I didn’t want to be caught dead listening to their music because back then, I like to annoy them saying music are noisy. I was happily to stick my taste to Super Mario’s or Donkey Kong’s theme songs.
But of course I gradually picked up my own taste in music shortly after my brothers left home. My first ever album I bought with my own allowance money was Smashing Pumpkins‘ Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness double cassettes and I love the Pumpkins ever since. I also started to buy cassettes on a weekly basis, until I discovered the wonders of Internet.
There was one program that was on air on the local Radio 4 station (now Traxx FM, I believe) on every Thursday 9pm to midnight that I would never missed back then. It was called the Modern Rock Chart Show and was hosted by Godfrey. I would tuned in and try to get every song titles played by him. And he had this Top-10 chart that was voted by callers right there and then. I was one of the voters as well. I actually recorded myself being aired on the radio, my own 15 seconds of fame. Now I wonder where that recorded cassette had gone to.
A trip back to the good old days. They were indeed good old days. Mid-90s, that was when alternative rock was at its prime. And to celebrate the journey down memory lane, here are 5 random tracks that I was totally hooked to back then. And they were actually played on the Modern Rock Chart Show, something you’ll never get from today’s local radio stations.

06Peter Pan - Mungkin Nanti

This may be a so-last-year number, but I only gotten to know of its real existence when The Big Band covered it at Planet Hollywood few weeks ago. Let’s face it, I am never a fan of local Malay music except for a track or two. I can’t even name you a track by Siti Nurhaliza, our so called homegrown diva.
Peter Pan are not local, I believe they’re Indons. One of them many Indon bands made it big over here. It doesn’t really matter. Mungkin Nanti is a good track. A catchy tune and definitely a sing-along song, if you can speak Malay that is. I am currently listening to other tracks by them. Not a bad Malay-emo band. But they could do better with a different band name.
Now I have the sudden urge to listen to Isabella.
Enjoy.
