21Youth Group - Forever Young

More soundtrack (or cover) goodies. I’m taking a guess this song was originally done by Alphaville. I sorta like this cover, brought forward to the modern tune of alternative rock by Youth Group (who?).
The song appeared in one of The O.C: Season 3 episodes. So it has a good chance of being included in one of many volumes of The O.C mix tape soundtrack. Last count, there are already 4 volumes in the market after the end of season 2 of The O.C.

Forever Young
by Youth Group
from Music from The O.C. (Mix 5)
Lets dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we’re only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?
Let us die young or let us live forever
We don’t have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music’s for the sad men
Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders we’re getting in tune
The music’s played by the mad men
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever young
Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don’t they stay young?
It’s so hard to get old without a cause
I don’t want to perish like a fleeing horse
Youth’s like diamonds in the sun
And diamonds are forever
So many adventures couldn’t happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams swinging out of the blue
We let them come true
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever
Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever?

let’s dance in style – young people are into stylish upbeat music and are very fashionable
let’s dance for a while – young people dance a lot, they go to many parties, they’re energetic, enjoy moving.
heaven can wait we’re only watching the sky – when you die it is believed you go to heaven. They’re still young so don’t worry about death so heaven can be put on hold until they’re elderly. The line is ironic because it’s saying they like the idea of heaven, that’s why they watch the sky however they don’t want to go to heaven because it means they would have to be dead to enter and this would contradict them being ‘forever young’.
hoping for the best but expecting the worst – when your young everything is unpredictable. You want everything to go right and to work out however you’re always expecting the unexpected especially when you’re a young person getting mixed up in a lot of bad experiences. These experiences usually have negative outcomes. Even though young people may not be aware of it at the time they realise that their decisions have consequences that is why they expect the worst.
are you gonna drop the bomb or not? – rhetorical question confirming the previous line being a bad experience.
let us die young or let us live forever – if they’re going to die than they want it to be while they’re young because they do not want to die while they’re still young yet they do not want to grow old than die. There are 2 options in this line die young or live forever =, never growing old, having eternal youth
dont have the power but we never say never – because of their young age it is hard to be recognised and listened to, they do not have the power to influence or change things bigger than themselves such as political and media matters. They understand this and are strong spirited people and they believe I themselves and always try their best to do what they can
sitting in the sandpit – uses imagery to emphasize how fast time goes on by. One minute you’re a child playing in the sand, the next you’re grown up.
life is a short trip – refers to how fast life goes, also in reference to last line saying how fast time has gone.
music’s for the sad man - ??
can you imagine when this race is run – race referring to life and the race being run refers to life being over or ending.
turn our golden faces into the sun – imagery, because they’re full of youth they’re golden.
praisin our leaders, getting in tune - ??
the music’s played by the mad men - ??
forever young, i want to be forever young – wants to stay young forever
do you really want to live forever
forever, forever
forever young, i want to be forever young – eternal youth
do you really want to live forever
forever, forever –repetition of ‘forever young ‘ for emphasis
some like water and some are like the heat - the use of similes compare youth to natural elements like water and heat. Youth being like water means easygoing, carefree, free spirited, cool, unpredictable, unsure, and trembly. Youth like heat or fire can be violent, rebellious, adventurous, loud, confident, opinionated, strong, arrogant and stubborn. –these are traits all young people inherit at one stage in their adolescence
some are melodies, some are the beat - the metaphors in this line compare youth to musical terms like melodies which can mean easily influenced, goes along with the crowd, follower, dreamer, individual. The beat is popular, a leader, strong, confident and is followed by the melody and influences the melody
sooner or later they’ll all be gone – the young wont be young or alive forever. Eventually they will grow old and pass on
why don’t they stay out – so they may as well stay out and have good times while they can and while they’re still youthful.
it’s hard to get on without a cause, - its hard to continue through life when you have nothing to live for or look forward to.
i don’t want to perish like a fading voice, - doesn’t want to suffer by growing old, fading voice meaning weakening. When you get older you become weaker and eventually you’re so weak you don’t have any influential power or control over anything and it’s as though you’ve disappeared and no one can hear you.
youth is like diamonds in the sun, - Diamonds are valuable, precious, and priceless; they shine and glisten in the sun, the simile helps convey how similar youth and diamonds are.
diamonds are forever – the last line compares youth and diamonds saying they are both precious and valuable etc. By saying diamonds are forever it is also being said that youth is forever.
so many adventures couldn’t happen today – life is too short. Many things that want and need to be done haven’t been.
so many songs we forgot to play – many things still left unsaid or undone
so many dreams swinging out of the blue,
left to come true– being so young -they still have time to achieve many things in their lives and many dreams can become realities. Things don’t make much sense, your plans are unsorted and all over the place just give it you’re all and anything can happen. Their lives are waiting to begin and dreams are waiting to come true.
forever young, i want to be forever young -
do you really want to live forever
forever, forever
forever young, i want to be forever young
do you really want to live forever
forever, forever
forever young, i want to be forever young
do you really want to live forever
forever, forever
forever young, i want to be forever young
do you really want to live forever,
forever, forever… - repetition of ‘forever young ‘ for emphasis
