Empire Records

If there’s one movie I could watch over and over again, it will be Empire Records (1995). It’s not an Oscar-winning or any other award-winning movie for that matter, but it has got a bunch of young movie superstars-to-be, a supeeerb boss, memorable quotes, and one hell of a soundtrack. This movie and soundtrack inspired my youth in the 1990s. Oh cliché.

So here in the spirit of ushering the new year, I present to you, my entire collection of tracks from Empire Records I have managed to find over the years.

Damn the man. Save the empire!

Note: Tracks with numbers in front are from the original soundtrack CD.

Click here for an excellent full list of the tracks that appeared in the movie as compiled by Simon Slavin.

Top 5 songs that got me hooked in the past 5 days

Inspired by the movie High Fidelity, here’s my Top 5 songs that got me hooked in past 5 days. These are the songs I listened to alot, as the title suggest, for the past 5 days. And what gets me hooked really depends on the state I am in. Right now I feel fucked. Shattered. And bloody lonely.

1. Breathless by Better than Ezra

I’ve always like Better than Ezra since the Good-days. And their latest album, Before the Robots only stamped that likeness even more. The first single from Robots, A Lifetime was really good (and I heard it played on Red 104.9 a few times, good for Red). But with Robots still on heavy rotations on my playlist, I’m taken to like Breathless more now. Breathless is a love song. And BTE plays pretty good rock love songs, like how rock songs should be played. I’ll never judge you. I can only love you.

2. Sigur Ros

I don’t care if I don’t understand a word they’re singing. They don’t sing much anyways. And I don’t have a song to single out from them. The reason why they’re in this list is because their latest album, Takk is fucking awesome. I can never get tired of it, yet. You’ve got to listen to the album as a whole to experience a mind bobbling journey. Pure orgasmic listening.

3. If There is a Chance by The Cardigans

The Swedish band that brings you Lovefool, My Favorite Game, and Lovefool. I would never expect to hear a slow, beautiful song by them. Nina Persson’s voice in If There is a Chance is soothing, yet overwhelming in sadness unlike any of their other songs that I heard of. The MP3 can be downloaded from the previous post, while it’s still up.

4. Teardrop by Elbow (MP3 format)

I must admit I couldn’t remember how the original Massive Attack’s version goes, but if this is not a cover version, it is nothing short of greatness. Thanks to Achtung Baby! for still keeping the MP3 alive. The same MP3 can also be downloaded here, while it’s still up.

5. Mayonaise by The Smashing Pumpkins

Out of love and out of feeling. Enough said.
